The Best Bug Out Bags to Get out of Dodge Fast

In these interesting times we are living through, it’s no wonder there has been a considerable uptick in interest in bug out bags. Having a fully loaded backpack or sack on the ready means that if stuff hit the fan, you could grab and go in a matter of moments.

For many folks, a well-designed bag that deserves to be considered amongst the best bug out bags serves more as a sense of security than a sign of flighty character. Generally, the people interested in having the essentials packed are doing so because they want to know that they and their families will be ok in the event of an emergency. Most tactical bug out bag aficionados are the sort of people prepared for anything, the ultimate preppers. And if you spend some time chatting with them, you begin thinking about what kinds of things you should have in your Bug Out Bag!

Of course, as you start digging into what sort of bag you should get, you realize there is quite a lot out there, and you have to make some important upfront decisions.

The first choice you have to make is whether this will be a designated Bug Out Bag (packed and waiting in the closet) or a multi-purpose pack that you could fill at a moment’s notice and be out the door. Most of the other decisions tend to follow from there.

The Designated Bug Out Bag

With this option, you need to think about a few factors. First, how many people are going to be supported by its contents. If you have a family of five, it’s got to be a lot bigger than if it’s just a couple. The next thing to consider is your escape plan. If you intend to disappear into the backcountry, you’re going to need very different gear than if you expect to motel your way across the country to another State. A pack that needs to hold up in the trunk of your car versus traversing the wilderness will mean very different bag selections. And finally, how long it’s going to take to get where you’re going. The number of days you have to live out of a bag significantly affects how big that bag needs to be. Of course, sometimes, emergencies happen, and you just have to get out. However, having a plan for where you’ll go ahead of time can help you get yourself ready, even if you have to adapt it to a given reality. 

The Multi-Purpose Bug out Bag

With this option, you can still have designated gear waiting in one place for the possible eventuality that you need to pack it up quickly and hit the road. However, it does allow you to think more creatively about the pack you choose to buy. If you’re an avid hiker, there’s no reason that a high-quality lightweight trail-rated backpack can’t do the job. If you intend to use it quite frequently on the trails, you’ll be very familiar with how it packs and how comfortable it will be in an emergency. On the other hand, many avid hunters want something that’s been well tested in the field. For those folks into tactical adventures, the right choice is going to be a backpack that can handle the riggers of an active deployment and often something that can double as a range bag. 

The great news is that there are so many fantastic options available. The trouble is, you could end up with a closet full of backpacks before you land on just the right one. With that in mind, we’re going to go through a wide range of our favorites and hopefully help you narrow it down.

1. Propper Unisex Bail Out Bag

Well made gear from a proper military-grade supplier, the Propper Bail Out Bag will hold everything you need for a quick get out of Dodge. If you’re into tactical sports, this kit has well-proportioned pockets with quality velcro closures to secure magazines, pistols, and any scopes or tactical accessories. Of course, this bag is probably best suited for a single person with not too much distance to cover. The capacity is a little on the small side, and the over-the-shoulder style format doesn’t tend to be great for long distances.

2. Paratus 3-Day Operator’s Backpack

The folks at Paratus make an outstanding pack. And while this is a great Bug Out Bag, we suspect you may find you want to use it as your daily gear carrying bag. It might actually be worth getting two, one to stow in case you need to make a quick exit or survive the apocalypse, the other to use as a regular range/hiking bag. Made from rugged 600D PVC backed polyester, the bag is durable and water-resistant. The large padded shoulder straps, sternum strap, and padded waist belt make the backpack comfortable to carry for long stretches, even when fully loaded. It comes with two Ally MOLLE pouches and the Rapid Deployment Pack, two detachable smaller bags that give you limitless customization and allow you to organize your pack in the best way you see fit. This Paratus is 40 liters in size, comes with a padded laptop sleeve, and is hydration-pouch ready.

3. Helikon Tex

Designed by survivalists, with a focus on keeping the essentials close at hand. The Tex attaches easily to the back of a car seat, where it can hang open without spilling its contents all over the floor, and yet giving you fast access to everything you need. The low-profile, external style means it fits snugly to your body, perfect for traipsing through thick bush and generally staying unnoticed. Of course, it comes well-appointed with lots of internal molle options for setting it up. However, we love the detachable front pocket that transforms into a shoulder bag in the event of a paired down excursion.

4. SOG Responder Bag, 11.5-Liter Storage

This over-the-shoulder tactical pack is designed for military and first responders, so it packs up tightly with everything you could possibly need in a hurry. Brought to you by the same folks that make the high-quality SOG knives, so you know this pack holds up. You can securely stow up to six AR magazines if you’re wandering into the woods or hitting the range after work. The polyester construction is solid, but the quick-release shoulder strap means you can get yourself free at a moment’s notice.

5. Plan-C Daypack by Hazard 4(R)

If you prefer your bug out bag to fit securely over both shoulders and yet still slide easily into tight spaces for storage, the Plan C is a fantastic tactical backpack choice. The build quality is first-rate, using Cordura, one of the world’s softest yet strongest nylon brands, and Roto-locking buckles to ensure nothing comes disengaged inadvertently. The bag screams molle expansion in pretty much every compartment. 6. Maxpedition Kodiak Gearslinger (Khaki-Foliage)

I love the Gearslinger because it does an excellent job of merging the shoulder bag with the backpack. The single strap design means you can toss it on quickly on your way out, and the backpack styling means you have room to stow everything you’re going to need. With a single crossbody strap, you can also slide the pack around to make everything accessible on the fly. And while this pack does come well-appointed with enough compartments for all your stuff, we particularly like that they finish it with a triple coat of polyurethane and a top layer of Dupont’s Teflon Fabric Protector to repel whatever elements you encounter.

7. BLACKHAWK 3 Day Assualt Pack

With the 3-Day Assualt Pack, Blackhawk has made a perfect little Bug Out Bag to have on the ready. There is not much in the way of frills, though. A large capacity pocket and a few ulterior compartments for bits and bobs, but that’s about it. However, the pack is designed to be easy on your back for several days if need be. The padding is well placed, and the removable sternum and waist straps take the load off your shoulders. The 3-Day Assault is a sturdy pack for a great price. This is not only a great and affordable tactical bug out bag, but it’s also a good-looking one.

8. LA Police Gear Atlas 24 Hour Tactical Backpack

Don’t let this small-size, low-price, tactical bag fool you into thinking it’s not up for the job. The Atlas pack by LA Police Gear makes for a solid range bag, a reliable daypack, and the perfect locked and loaded bug out bag waiting to decamp in a hurry. Sure it does not have the space that some of the other offerings on here do, but what it doesn’t have in size, it makes up for durability. Made from 900D Polyester with PVC Coating, the Atlas is going to hold together. The Laser-cut MOLLE is functional and more subtle than standard MOLLE webbing, making this bag easy to pack. And, if you’re looking to expand it, the LAPG Shoulder Strap System integrates with the separate Tactical Chest Pack Attachment for expanded tactical operations.

9. TETON Sports Scout 3400 Internal Frame Backpack

When you need to be prepared to last several days, you need more than a regular bug out bag. You need a propper pack. The Teton Sports Scout is designed for disappearing into the wilderness. 12. Eberlestock Switchblade Pack

This bag is the closest you’ll get to a quick-draw backpack. Eberlestock Switchblade is designed to make your firearm easy to get to in a hurry. The Rare-earth magnetic openings allow quick access to your handgun via concealed carry pouches from either side of the pack. The Loop-Velcro PALS webbing inside will enable you to rack either MOLLE or Velcro-backed accessories. It’s got a top zippered slip pocket with a loop field for patch adhesion, a front admin pocket for added organization, two zippered side pockets, a middle tech compartment, and a fully opening and lockable central compartment. The central tech compartment has a padded pocket sized to fit a 13″ laptop and most tablets. The main section has a hydration reservoir, and there are dual hydration tube ports. While this guy may not be a full-on month in the jungle sort of rucksack, it’s perfect for your EDC bag or a handily stashed bug out bag for when stuff hits the fan.

15. 5.11 Tactical Amp72 Backpack

Let’s be honest, most overnight operations seem to have a way of stretching out an extra couple of days. With the roomy AMP72 backpack, you’ll be ready to expand to the mission parameters. If you’re looking for a military-style tactical backpack, this is probably what you’ve been picturing in your mind. Adaptable and sturdy, the RUSH72 is a brilliant pack. Engineered to be a full-featured 72-hour bag, it provides ample space for gear and accessories while remaining rugged and reliable enough for extended excursions or tactical deployments. 18. Osprey Farpoint Trek 55 Pack

19. Tactical Tailor Three Day Plus Assault Pack

The Three Day Assault Pack Plus is ideal when you may need more supplies than a regular Three Day Pack but don’t want to be stuck carrying a full-out rucksack. So what does the Plus actually give you over and above the standard Three Day Assault Pack? Well, the external webbing has been replaced by four additional zippered compartments, and to help balance the extra weight, a more robust padded waist belt has been included. They’ve also added a pair of bottom compression straps for a sleeping pad or other larger items. Not to mention, they’re added a carry handle, thick padded shoulder straps with sternum strap, and an internal hydration sleeve with ports for a drinking tube. I’m thinking for any three-day assault I’m setting off on, I’m going to want to make sure I packed the Plus.

20. Gregory Baltoro 65 Pack

If you’re going to be walking for days, this is probably the best pack you can get for your body. The newest model includes the recently designed rotating load transfer panels on the hipbelt that automatically register your hip angle and articulate with your body’s movements. Imagine a pack that makes itself easier to carry as you walk. There are likely thousands of ex-servicemen who wish Uncle Sam had gotten round to designing something like this for their long marches. Of course, the specially designed back panel is also pretty great. It delivers excellent airflow and moisture management while keeping the pack very close to your back for even more energy savings while you’re carrying heavier loads. Now, none of this means anything if it’s a pain to pack, which of course, it’s not. Well-appointed with compartments and zippers, this bag is easy to load and keeps things in place to make for a simple camp setup when you stop.

21. Mystery Ranch Stein 65L Backpack

The Mystery Ranch Stein 65 is perfectly designed for the backpacker who appreciates the durability of a more traditional pack but still wants something lightweight and streamlined for those long-haul treks. This bag really is the ideal backpack if you need it to do a little bit of everything. Mystery Ranch recently updated the Stein with a Futura Yoke that adjusts the back panel vertically for a more precise fit, meaning it’s so much more comfortable on those weeklong treks. Built on a similar chassis as Mystery Ranch’s time-tested Glacier backpack, this one weighs in about a pound less and has about 500 cubic inches less capacity.

To keep the pack’s weight down, so you can pack more food for longer trips, they used carbon fiber stays instead of the industry-standard aluminum. They also employed lighter fabrics and foams to create a bag that isn’t just rugged but also lightweight and comfortable to carry whether you’re wandering well-cut trails in a National Park or crossing rough terrain in a remote Forest Service wilderness area.

22. Osprey Aether AG 60 Pack

Guys, let’s be honest, if you’re planning to take off into parts unknown at a moment’s notice, you’re never going to be disappointed with an Osprey pack. They are easy to stuff full of everything you need, and it all makes sense when you’re trying to rummage through it to find what you need later. You will likely get laughed at if you turn up at the gun range with an Osprey full of pistols. On the other hand, you can be sure they won’t see that coming, so it could be the ultimate in concealed carry! However, if you need to carry some serious weight through the bush or across a range, there is not much out there that will feel as comfortable. All of the straps on this Osprey are fully customizable to your body, and their anti-gravity technology hugs the gear to your body, which makes it feel dramatically lighter.

23. Eberlestock HalfTrack Military Backpack

The HalfTrack is the pack that every active service person wishes the government would issue them. It’s brilliantly designed to adjust to any body type, and it’s set up to customize completely to whatever gear you’re toting with seemingly endless MOLLE loops ready to go. A unique feature of the Eberlestock Military HalfTrack is the plastic mesh radio rack on the rear wall with ports for the antenna to pop out the top. Good Morning Viet Nam! The HalfTrack also has two large side pockets, capable of carrying two 3-liter hydration systems, and inboard sleeves on the other outer pockets are ideal for more compact equipment.

The D-ring equipped tunnel pockets are great for carrying skis, tripods, shooting sticks, and other long equipment. And if you want more storage, the addition of pouches is incredibly easy. Padlock webbing runs up and down both the interior and exterior of the Eberlestock Military HalfTrack Backpack, so it’s possible to attach as many Eberlestock pouches as you need. Even the weight belt has PALS webbing on it. You simply will not be disappointed with this bag. It does everything.

24. Arc’teryx LEAF Assault Pack 45

When I first discovered Arc’teryx, I really wanted to hate them. The name is a pain in the ass, and they are gosh-darn expensive bags. Of course, the longer you spend with one, the more it starts to win you over. In many ways, it’s akin to an Osprey bag, but it’s just a little bit more badass. With the LEAF, the folks at Arc’teryx have come up with a pretty great rucksack that will continually find ways to impress you. The name is terrible: LEAF. And I almost skipped reviving it just because of that. Although, as I mentioned, the names suck, the bags are pretty top rate. My favorite part is how the main compartment unzips. This thing spreads completely open from top to bottom and has several velcroed in pouches that make feel like your dad’s old workbench.

There is a spot for everything, and it’s all accessible. It’s like you could turn up at a campsite, hang the bag on a tree and open up your wardrobe. It’s a one-zip walk-in forest closet. It’s also got many more carrying straps than an Osprey, and it just feels a lot more rugged. It’s pricey, but I think you’ll get your money’s worth out of this guy.

25. Aston House BackCountry Tactical Backpack

Made by the good folks at Hill People Gear, this pack is a great option for a Bug Out Bag! Now, let’s be clear up front. It’s the type of bag that you stuff full of ultra-light gear for a get-out-quick sort of excursion. It’s a great overnight bag and brilliant as a hikers pack through the mountains. However, unlike many of the other bags on this list, it’s not a tactical pack. I’m sure you could creatively stow a firearm in one of the many pockets, but it’s not designed to form or function for that (It will support pals pouches on the outside or inside, and it will connect velcro pouches on the inside.) Range bag, this is not. But it is a well-priced, high-quality hiking/hunting pack, with space enough to hold a carbine and all sorts of gear really well.

26. GoRuck – GR3 – USA Tactical Backpack

The thing about bugging out is that it’s a last resort sort of situation. Things have gotten to a place where you need to pull the chute and get outta Dodge. Of course, that means you usually don’t know what form your escape will take until it’s go-time. So while many folks figure they will take to the backcountry or ride the rails to a new life (I may have read On The Road too many times), that may not be the case. Which is why we love the GR3. 

It’s perfectly capable of being a tactical outdoor bag, and you’ll be able to fill it with enough stuff to carry you through days in a boxcar. However, what if bugging out means hopping a flight to ol’ Mexico? The GR3 is sized to the largest carryon specs allowed by the airlines, meaning you can take off to your new life with everything you need in the overhead compartment. You can even tuck the shoulder straps and carry it like a suitcase, so as not to raise any suspicion. And should you be riding the rails, the MOLLE hooks and expandable compartments means that you can take on any number of sleeping bags or extra tools. 

27. Voodoo Tactical Men’s Mojo Load-Out Bag

It’s challenging to find one bag that will be perfect no matter what situation you find yourself in. However, if you want to have an emergency bag with tons of stuff ready and waiting in the trunk of your car, this one is pretty bang-on. A huge main compartment, surrounded by eleven external pouches and a back wall of MOLLE hooks, this bag is a preppers dream. It’s also a damn fine range bag. If packed right, you can get two sets of battle dress uniforms, a pair of shoes, extra socks, base layers, jacket, ballistics vest, chest rig, shoulder pads, and knee pads. Even then, there is still room after that for 10+ AR Magazines, 10+ Pistol Magazines, additional ammunition, a bit of essential food, and medical gear. And, if you do it right, you can also fit a standard configuration M4 perfectly on an angle. Most likely, you’re going to use the Mojo Load-Out bag from the car to wherever you’re going with the handles. However, it does come with attachable backpack straps if you have to go a bit further afield.

28. Velox II Quick Action Tactical Backpack

We’ve been really loving 3VGear. Lately, they’ve been putting out some pretty fantastic products, and Velox is no exception. The name is Latin for “swift” or “rapid,” and, true to form, this pack is built for people on the move. At 27-liters, it’s roomy and has lots of pockets and a great deal of organization. However, it’s lightweight and easy to maneuver in, even when it’s stuffed full. Even with it’s smaller size, it’s still ideal for multi-day trips as well as rucking or even as a day pack as you make your way through the city. The main compartment has a clamshell design that allows the backpack to open completely and lay flat, which means it’s easy to load gear and keep everything where you want it. A padded sleeve on the inside and a secondary external pocket could be used for a laptop, iPad, or if needed, a hydration reservoir.

29. Military Tactical Backpack Large 3 Day Assault Pack

I’m going to let you in on a little secret. It is possible to find a well-made tactical backpack for less than $100. Sure it may not have all the bells and whistles as the high-end version. Nor is it likely to come with a lifetime warranty or expandable velcro accessories. However, when you think of why you need the pack, you likely don’t need all those extras. The folks at Reebow have found a sweet spot when it comes to affordable tactical backpacks. Taking advantage of global supply chains, they have put together a super tough rucksack that will hold a considerable load comfortably. And, because anyone can add a MOLLE setup to their product, this three-day assault pack is expandable, just the way the high-priced variety are. Except, because you spent considerably less money, you can probably afford more gear to strap to it. Made tough with double-stitching, heavy-duty zippers, and utility-style cord pulls, this bag won’t let you down.

30. Red Rock Outdoor Gear Large Assault Pack, Dark Earth

Red Rock outdoor gear is another supplier taking advantage of global infrastructure to make high-quality gear at a good price. The Large Assualt pack is nothing revolutionary in its design, but it’s a solid workhorse of a bag that won’t disappoint at a great price. Four expanding compartments provide up to 35-liters of storage with built-in internal dividers and zippered pockets. Adjustable reinforced padded mesh shoulder straps, a movable waist strap, and a sternum strap evenly distribute the weight across your shoulders and waist for all-day comfort. A padded mesh back panel serves as a concealed pocket or provides storage for almost any hydration bladder, up to 2.5-liters. With compression straps on three sides, it’s easy to tighten your pack or reduce the volume if you aren’t fully loaded. The outside of this pack is clad in MOLLE webbing to allow for expansion and customization to make it the perfect base for a bug-out or EDC bag.

31. Sandpiper of California Long Range Bugout Backpack

As the folks at Sandpiper of California say, adventure is everywhere. And, with the Long Range Bugout Backpack, you’re pretty much set for whatever that means. I have to say, I really love their gear. The Long Range model has the capacity to carry enough gear for several days. The main compartment is expandable to manage all of your hydration, communication, and organizational needs. At the same time, the padded lumbar area and mesh-lined back provide comfort and breathability during longer hikes. Multiple compression loops, tie-downs, and attachment points make it simple to add more equipment and accessories as needed. Of course, you can also mix in your MOLLE / PALS pouches to customize the pack to your specific needs.

32. Condor 3 Day Assault Pack

This bag was designed with the idea that you should be able to live out of it for at least three-days, all-in. However, if you pack it right, there is no reason you shouldn’t be able to stretch that out to seven or eight days. Seven pockets mean that you can run a tight ship and keep everything precisely where it’s supposed to be, including your two 3-liter hydration packs. The main compartment includes multiple mesh pockets and gear straps to keep more sensitive gear tight to your back for safekeeping. The pack’s bottom is set up with additional webbing, meaning you can add even more equipment below. The chest straps and removable waistband allow you to distribute weight evenly and make for a much better hiking experience. The last thing you need is the pain of hauling your bag to ruin your backcountry adventure.
